Bridges

Dental bridges are a form of an artificial tooth which are placed to fill gaps between teeth. This can happen if a tooth falls off resulting in a large gap between two adjacent teeth. To fill this space, dental bridges are used. They are shaped and made into a color that matches as closely as possible with the natural shape and color of surrounding teeth.

Materials used in dental bridges :

The kind of material used in a dental bridge varies depending on the usage. The majority of dental bridges are made of porcellain material while a relatively small proportion uses metallic materials while preparing dental bridges. However, the structure of a typical bridge will contain a partially flexible structure which acts pretty much like a support and this contains the tooth that will fit in the gap.

This flexible structure can be easily placed in between the gap between two teeth and effectively and efficiently it can be stuck to the nearby teeth. The dental bridges usually contains one or even more false teeth (depending on the size of the gap). These false teeth are called "Pontics". The natural teeth in between which the dental bridge will be placed are known as "Abutment teeth".

Procedure for getting a dental bridge :

1. First, the gum area where the dental bridge will be placed is numbed with the help of anesthesia.

2. Then the dentist will slice an area from booth the edges of the abutment teeth, to make more space for the dental bridge and false tooth. If the abutment teeth already have fillings, then some of the fillings may be left to act as the crown for the new false tooth.

3. Then a mould of the hollow between the teeth is taken to act as a basis for making the the new false tooth or teeth. This mould is then sent to the laboratory for preparing the new dental bridge.

4. In the meantime to protect the surrounding teeth from misaligning themselves, a temporary bridge may be placed. This is usually fixed with the of a wire.

5. In the next visit to the dentist, this temporary visit is removed and the dental bridge from the laboratory is placed in the gap.

Advantages of a dental bridge :

The results can be great and usually dramatically improve a person's smile. A dental bridge can really enhance a person's smile and confidence. It also has many other advantages such as :

1. It prevents surrounding teeth realign and change their shape by plugging the gap between the teeth.

2. It is a painless procedure because it doesn't involve any drilling or other forms of painful procedures.

3. It can be made very accurately in the dental laboratory and the resulting tooth looks almost the same as the surrounding teeth.

4. These dental bridges are far more durable as compared to dentures.

5. They are also comparatively lighter when compared to other dentures.
